STAFFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL are warning people of a computer based scam taking place across the county. It is reported that a local resident received a call regarding problems with their computer and then having to pay a fee of £130 to get it fixed. After realising too late that it was a scam she did ask for the telephone number and went to the bank to stop the payment being made. The telephone number that she had been given was local meaning clearly the scammer was using names in the telephone book.
A spokesman for the council said " We have previously been alerted about various computer based scams that are taking place, where residents have received phone calls from someone who is claiming to be from Microsoft or SupportoncLick suggesting that you may have a problem with your computer and offering to fix it for a fee. This is a scam which is yet again in operation across Staffordshire".
The people behind this computer scam are targeting people with limited knowledge about computers but also easily convinced that there is a problem with their computer. For people who think there is a problem with your computer contact a a local IT technician instead of seeking advice from cold callers.
