40 couples play in Leek Golf Club's long-established popular Bank Holiday fixture

FORTY couples played in Leek Golf Club's long-established popular Bank Holiday fixture.

Leading the way, with a fantastic 43 points, was the team of P McGahan and V McGahan.

The next best score was 38 points from three teams, pecking order being decided by back nine scores: I Menzies/T Danisevich, P Cordon/J Cordon and M Edgley/S Edgley.

Also in the prizes were R Woolley/S Woolley, with 37 points. The nearest the pin competitions on the fourth were won by G Duncan in the ladies and I Beeson in the men.

In the same competition on the seventh, L McGovern took the honours for the ladies, while I Sergeant did likewise for the men. Tournament organiser Andy Baxter said the number of entrants defied the trend that other clubs were experiencing with support for opens.

He said: "With so much golf available for all players, people now can 'cherry-pick' the best venues for these events. Leek Golf Club has obviously been high on their 'pick-list' for choice." The event will be repeated in August.
