Leek opening batsman Alex Mellor scored a maiden century for Staffordshire on the opening day of their Minor Counties clash with Hertfordshire at Knypersley yesterday.
The 22-year-old top-scored with 111 on only his second Unicorns Championship appearance, as Staffordshire moved on to 315 all out. Hertfordshire were reduced to 57-3 in reply.
Mellor's Leek team mate Greg Willott claimed the wicket of Hertfordshire skipper Nesan Jeyaratnam, trapped lbw after scoring just 13 runs.
It was a good weekend for Mellor and Willott, who figured in Leek's only second win of the season against Whitmore, in the North Staffordshire & South Cheshire League, the previous day.
The defending Premier Division champions chalked up their overdue win in style.
The Moorlanders had looked in desperate trouble after losing four wickets with just 11 runs on the scoreboard
However, half-centuries from Dave Ferris (61) and club professional Nadeem Malik (68) rescued the situation.
Ferris and Malik shared a fifth-wicket partnership of 124 to turn the tables, as Leek managed to post 179-7 from their 55 overs.
Whitmore skipper Lee Johnson was the pick of the home attack, finishing with figures of 4-52.
The shift of momentum continued after tea, when Whitmore crumbled to 49 all out in reply.
Malik's impressive all-round performance continued as he notched up 6-26, with skipper Willott also playing his part with a return of 4-17 off 17 overs.
The victory moved Leek up to fourth from bottom of the table .
