Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to take extra care at home and on the roads during a second national strike by the Fire Brigades Union to take place between 6.30pm and 11.30pm on Saturday, October 19.
Contingency plans have been put in place across the county ahead of the industrial action and emergency response crews will be available at strategic locations across Staffordshire.
In addition a senior officer will be based in fire control at Stone HQ to monitor and manage all emergency calls received during the five-hour period where the Service will be prioritising life risk incidents.
The Service is warning the Staffordshire community that it will not be business as usual and is urging residents to take extra care during the strike and to only dial 999 in a genuine emergency.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Director if Response Julian Hildtich said: “We have drawn up a contingency plan to cover the strike period. However, we are warning the community that we cannot provide the same level of emergency response as we would do under normal circumstances.
“I would urge people to be extra vigilant while the industrial action is taking place.
"Don’t take unnecessary risks such as cooking after drinking alcohol or driving in dark, wet conditions unless you really need to.
"If you have older or vulnerable neighbours, relatives or friends, visit them and test that their smoke alarms are working as well as checking all electrical appliances and plugs.
“It is also important to dispose of all smoking materials carefully, plan an escape route and introduce a simple safety routine at bedtime.
"Motorists should take extra care when driving, fasten your seatbelt, don’t use a mobile phone and don’t drive when overtired.
"Taking simple precautionary steps could have life-saving consequences.”
