AFTER reading the article in last week's Leek Post re: Anger as council decides to cut youth service jobs, it was a surprise to read the comments from Councillor Gill Burton saying that: "I thought the county council would have held further discussions and looked at the review again after receiving a 16,000 petition and many letters including those from parish councils."
The reason it was a surprise is that at the district council full council on February 25, 2014, a notice of motion was put forward by the MDA asking the district council members to support the following: "Staffordshire Moorlands council shows its support for all the youth workers in the Staffordshire Moorlands and asks Staffordshire County Council to retain the youth workers in the Staffordshire Moorlands, for all the valuable work they do for the young people."
That notice of motion was lost and a new motion was put forward by the Conservatives, which was to support the review that the county council was going to do to cut youth service jobs.
This then went to a named vote among those voting to support the county council review was Councillor Gill Burton.
If she felt strongly as many of us did in supporting the youth then she would have voted against supporting the county council and supported the young people and their youth workers.
It is a terrible decision they have made and one that will have a huge affect on our young people.
For a full list of how your councillor voted this can be obtained from Staffordshire Moorlands District Council.
Our young people are our future and it is heartbreaking to see how they have been treated. Linda Malyon, Leader of the Moorlands Democrats (MDA)
