PEOPLE are being asked to be extra vigilant after an elderly lady had her handbag stolen in a supermarket in Leek.

At 3.15pm on Wednesday, September 11, the woman was shopping in Morrisons Supermarket in Newcastle Road when her handbag was stolen from inside her carrier bag.

It contained her purse, cash and bank cards, house keys, mobile phone, and driving licence which had her home address on it.

CCTV showed two Eastern European females following the lady around the store and leaving shortly afterwards with the handbag.

The town’s Neighbourhood Watch said the thieves “are well schooled in stealing”.

It advises never let your purse or handbag out of your possession; make sure they are zipped or fastened; and never leave unattended bags or coats on the backs of supermarket trolleys.

If you suspect that you or another customer is being targeted, contact store personnel.
