Motorists are being urged to drive carefully this evening after dozens of trees across the county were felled by strong winds today.

Staffordshire County Council’s highways teams are out clearing blocked or partially blocked roads but this will take some time, so people need to be careful if out this evening and tonight.

Fallen trees have been reported countywide including Manor Road in Madeley, Teen Road in Cheadle, Star Bank near Alton Towers and Sandon Bank in Stafford where a motorist was trapped in their car.

Leader of Staffordshire County Council Philip Atkins said: “People really need to be careful if they are driving in Staffordshire this evening following today’s strong winds. Our highways teams are out across the county, pulling out all the stops to get roads cleared. However it is going to take some time to complete the job and so people need to drive carefully, especially in the dark.

“We’re grateful to people reporting fallen trees by calling us on 0300 111 8000 and while the worst is over, we’d ask people to check the latest weather before travelling.”
