A RURAL post office is to open its doors again but for only six hours a week.
Waterhouses Post Office, which was situated at The Hub in Waterfall Lane, Waterhouses, closed its doors in May following the resignation of the sub-postmaster.
At last week’s meeting of Waterhouses Parish Council a letter was received from the post office Field Change manager David Patrick outlining the new proposals.
He said: “In order to restore Post Office services to our customers in Waterhouses, we are proposing to introduce a hosted outreach service which will operate from the same location as the previous service.
“The branch temporarily closed in May 2014 because the sub postmaster resigned. We are now in a position to restore the service to our customers in the local community and the establishment of a hosted service presents the best possible solution in the Waterhouses area.
“A nearby sub postmaster who will offer the service has been identified . We are now starting a six week consultation and would like people to tell us what they think about the suitability of the proposed new service.
“Before we finalise our plans, we would like to hear views on the suitability of the location and the premises along with the proposed days and opening times.”
It is proposed to open the Post Office on Tuesday 11.30am to 2.30pm and Friday 9am to 12pm.
Councillor Andrew Carr said: “It would be more desirable if there were more hours, but beggars can’t be choosers. It does give people six hours a week and people should use it or we could lose it.”
Councillor John Goldstraw said the hours presently offered were better than nothing.
He said: “We have now got to get on with it and publicise that it is open to enable it to be used.”
Councillor John Harvey said the location is to be the same, but the only difference is the hour while councillor Edwin Wain ask why was consultation required for just two three hour days.
Councillor Wain added: “This does get us off to a start and will help pensioners.”
Mr Patrick said that in order to restore Post office services to customers in Waterhouses, the new service may open during or soon after the end of the consultation. However this does not affect the period of public consultation which ends on September 12 2014.
