THE ANNUAL Calton Wakes proved highly successful on Saturday when more than a £1,000 was raised for St Mary’s church in the village.

The wakes, held on a field adjacent to the church, was opened by John Goldstraw, the parish councillor for the area.

The event, featuring stalls, games and a prize draw raffle as well as other family activities, was designed to appeal to all age groups.

Additional attractions included a plant sale, refreshments, tombola, white elephant and a cake stall, while home-made teas were served in the village hall.

Maxene Middleton, spokesman for Calton Wakes, said: “We are very pleased to have raised more than £1,000. The rain which was forecast managed to say clear of us, which was a bonus.

“It was very pleasing to see many of the newcomers to the village at the event.

“We would like to thank Tarmac for the donation of a cordless drill for the main draw and also everyone who donated so generously to the event.”
