THERE was a close tussle for top honours at the Staffordshire Moorlands Trials Championship at Manor Steps, Quarnford, which resulted in Billy Craig taking over the lead from Kev Hipwell.

Visitors Rob Margretts, from Leicestershire, and Jonny Stewart from Cheshire, beat Craig into third place.

It was very tight at the top of the Experts competition, with only one mark separating the first three riders.

Although Margretts won the trial outright, Stewart and Craig had to rely on the tie-breaker to decide the result.

Margretts lost five marks on section three, where Stewart only lost two, but more consistent riding through the rest of the course saw him through to victory.

The 50/50 route saw a similar tussle between riders of equal ability but Pete Ruscoe from Stafford beat Ady Mellor and Guy Bradley in a very tight finish.

The clubman's route resulted in a walkover for Andy Hipwell, who took his classic twin-shock Yamaha to a resounding win by 19 marks from youth rider Scott Hipwell and seniors Carl Braddock and Paul Mountford, riding modern equipment.
