THE A53 Leek to Buxton Road was closed for almost four hours after a van burst into flames while travelling and melted the road surface.

At 3.45pm on Friday, May 9, Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue were called to a large fire on the highway between Blackshaw Moor and Upper Hulme.

On Police arrival a white Citreon Berlingo van was well ablaze. The van was full with fuel and for safety reasons the road was closed and a cordon put in place. The fire completely burned out the van and melted the road surface.

Burning oil was also on the road so it had to remain closed to allow Highways officers to clean up and conduct emergency road repairs.
