COMMUNITY leaders have praised police for helping to put a stop to parking issues in their town.
Cheadle town councillor Peter Warrilow has thanked members of Cheadle's Local Policing Team for carrying out enforcement action to motorists causing parking obstructions in Prince George Street, after numerous complaints by the town council and residents.
Police initially started tackling the problem by putting appeals out in the local media, before issuing warnings to motorists who parked their vehicles on footpaths in Prince George Street, which was then followed by enforcement action which saw a number of Fixed Penalty Notices being issued.
Mr Warrilow said: "Thank you for a smashing job in Prince Geroge Street, there is now only one van which parks there occasionally, but it's made it a whole lot safer now.
"However, there is now a concern with the number of people driving the wrong way down the one way system.
"The other day a paper boy was on his bike travelling down the road and nearly got knocked down by a vehicle travelling the wrong way and it just missed him.
"There will be a serious accident or fatality there one of these days." PC Dave Stubbs said that police would continue to monitor the parking situation in Prince George Street and will also look at the problem of vehicles travelling down the one way system the wrong way.
He added: "We will continue to monitor the situation and will take further enforcement action if necessary. We are looking at a long term solution with the town council."
