MORE than 300 new students from the Leek campus of Buxton and Leek College got to know each other over hot dogs and team games to mark the start of the new academic year.
A barbecue and team-building exercise at Tittesworth Visitor Centre in Meerbrook gave the newcomers a chance to get to know each other and their tutors before lectures began this week.
College Principal Len Tildsley, who was helping man the barbecue at the event, said: "It's a tradition for the Leek campus to organise a getting to know you session for the new students. It's good for them to take part in these team-building games to meet other young people who are outside of their own class groups."
Teenagers from Art and Design, Childcare and Education, Health and Social Care, Engineering, Sports Coaching and Fitness, Hair and Beauty and A level groups were among those taking part in the outdoor activities and enjoying a last burst of summer sun.
New student Abbey Coates, aged 16, from Leek, said: "I want to work either as a paramedic or a mental health nurse and I chose the Health and Social Care course at Buxton and Leek College because it will give me not just the academic qualifications that I need but also the practical experience.
"The college has good links with local companies and organisations so that we can go on work placements and I'm hoping to work with both the John Munroe Hospital and St John's Ambulance to help me decide where my future lies."
Sam Oldfield, aged 16, from Leek chose Engineering after viewing the facilities at the Leek campus. He said: "The college in Leek has always had a good reputation for its engineering courses and I think the facilities are very good. They will be even better next year when we get to use the new equipment in the accommodation block they are building now. I am looking forward to starting the course and have already met my tutors today."
Places are still available on some courses and prospective students should check out the website at www.blc.ac.uk or call the admissions team at Leek on 01538 398866.
