RYAN Holroyd (Staffordshire Moorlands AC) failed in his attempt to win the Staffordshire Cross-Country Championships senior men's title at Stafford Common on Saturday.

Holroyd, pictured above, had to settle for third spot behind race winner Alex Brecker (City of Stoke AC) and runner-up Ben Gamble (Tipton Harriers).

However, it was nevertheless a good championships for the Moorlands club.

Rebecca Hughes (under 17 women) and Kerry Marchant (women's vets) finished second in their respective races and Katie Hughes (under-15s girls) and Gareth Briggs (men's vets) took third in their events.

Marchant only narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the main women's race, in which she finished fourth, but she gained some consolation by leading the Moorlands into first place in the women's veterans team event.
