A YOUNG swimmer has helped put Leek on the map in a national competition.
Joseph Hulme (pictured) from Leek ASC travelled to The John Charles Sports Centre in Leeds last weekend to compete in the prestigious British International Open Meet.
Aged just 15, Hulme was swimming against some of Britain’s most talented athletes.
The youngster took part in five events over four days, making junior finals for the 100m Butterfly and the 200m and 400m Individual Medleys – an incredible achievement, as the junior finals were for athletes aged 18 and under.
Hulme coped well with the pressure of such a high level of competition.
He swam a personal best in the final of the 100m Butterfly in a time of 57.29 seconds, breaking the under-17s Staffordshire junior county record and the under-16s West Midlands regional record.
Hulme also broke the West Midlands regional record in the 200m medley with a personal best of 2.10.94.
He also swam personal best times in the 200m Backstroke and the 400IM.
The young swimmer also clocked close to his best time in the 200m Butterfly. He just missed out on the final but was first reserve.
Hulme will now join his team mates to participate in the second weekend of the Staffordshire County Championships at Stafford.
