AFTER a short summer break Herbs and Leekies will be back at The Red Lion in Cheddleton with special guest Kevin Dempsey.
Kevin, pictured, is a guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer who has performed at previous gigs hosted at by the Herbs and Leekies at the former Swan in Leek.
He has performed at the venue with Whippersnapper, Dave Swarbrick, Joe Broughton, Peter Knight and Ulcedwr, so he is familiar with local music fans. He has even backed Percy Sledge and Martha and The Vandellas.
Kevin can take any song and make it his own. The Rolling Stones ‘It’s All Over Now’ pulsates with anger set against a deceptively cool yet complex jazz guitar.
He has a great stock of songs from the old Copper classic, ‘The Constant Lovers’ to ‘Bushes and Briars’ and the ‘Pride of Kildare’.
It is almost impossible to stay dry eyed at the wistfullness of his take on the Richard Thompson penned ‘Waltzing’s for Dreamers’.
Kevin not only rearranges old classics but has crafted many melodies and lyrics of his own.
Each set is linked with an easy patter, off the wall humour and pleasantly eccentric anecdotes.
Tickets to see Kevin Dempsey at the Folk at the Lion on Thursday, September 26, are priced at £10 and available from the venue or by calling 01538 385260.
Doors will open for the gig at 8pm for an 8.30pm start.
