A charity car boot sale which has been running at the same site in Leek for 12 years is looking for a new venue amid plans to open a Waitrose store in the town.

The weekly event will be held in the car park of the Co-operative Store off Buxton Road for just three weeks more, before organiser fund-raising stalwart Cynthia Lubacz must find a new location.

The move comes ahead of Waitrose taking over the food store site and accompanying car park, where the car boot is held.

The company has said that there will not be enough room for the Sunday car boot to continue.

Cynthia's car boot, which has been running in Leek for two decades, has raised more than £20,000 for a variety of animal charities.

Cynthia said: "We have got a couple of strong possibilities for a new site for the car boot and hope to carry on straight through without a break in between the move.

"I am disappointed of course that we are having to find another site, as we have been very happy at the Co-op site over the years.

"However, I think it is understandable if Waitrose feels that it cannot accommodate us.

"It's down to the popularity of Sunday shopping, which can only be good for the town as it brings people in."

A Waitrose spokesman said: "After careful consideration, and taking into account the anticipated use of the car park, regrettably we do not believe there is capacity to accommodate the car boot sale."

Meanwhile, Post Office customers are set to benefit from a new modern look and longer opening hours branch at the Buxton Road site, as the Post Office takes the opportunity to revamp its branch within the store at the same time as the main shop being transformed into a Waitrose. As part of Post Office plans to modernise the network and extend opening hours, the refurbished Leek Post Office will have six serving positions.

Opening hours at the modernised branch will be 8am until 8pm Monday to Saturday and 10am until 4pm on Sundays, giving customers an extra 24 hours and 30 minutes of service every week.

Leek Post Office will close for extensive refurbishment, while the store is converted to a Waitrose branch.

Leek Post Office will close at 3pm on Wednesday, March 26, while the Co-operative Store will close on the same day at 5pm. The new-look branch will open from 9am on Thursday, May 1.

Nearby Post Offices which will be on hand during the temporary closure of the Buxton Road Post Office, include: Westwood Post Office, 2 Westwood Road, Leek; and Cheddleton Post Office, 27 Cheadle Road, Cheddleton.
