CHILDREN at a Leek first school have been putting their culinary skills to the test.

Following on from the great success of the Great British Bake Off, pupils at Beresford Memorial CE (VA) First School decided to have their own 'Great Beresford Bake Off!'

Pupils were allowed only the same five ingredients, plus one secret ingredient of their own for the competition.

With the help of a grown-up they spent the weekend cooking cakes which were brought into school on Monday, where a panel of experts - teachers Mr Brown and Mrs Quinn - judged the entries for qualities such as taste, texture and general yumminess.

The two winners each received a £10 gift voucher, and the two runners-up a £5 gift voucher.

Mr Brown said: "It was a very tricky process judging all of the cakes and sometimes a second helping was needed just to make sure the right decision was reached."
