Prison Officer Numbers Falling

The number of prison officers in the West Midlands region has been cut by 23 per cent in three years, figures obtained by the Howard League for Penal Reform have revealed.

Research published by the charity shows that there were 2,143 officer grade staff working in the region's prisons in September 2013, compared with 2,786 in September 2010.

Included is Werrington Young Offenders' Institute, which the figures show had 86 officers in September 2010 and 70 in September 2013, a fall of 19 per cent.
