Staffordshire families will continue to receive value for money school meals thanks to a price freeze for the new school year.
For the current school year, the cost of a meal will remain at £2.10 in primary, special and middle schools and £2.20 in high schools.
All meals conform to government and School Food Trust nutritional standards for schools Prices were frozen thanks to smarter buying and sourcing food locally.
This means Staffordshire school pupils are getting a healthy, nutritious two course meal and drink for less than the price of a cup of coffee on the high street.
Entrust, the Staffordshire County Council and Capita joint venture, has managed to keep costs low by effectively managing food suppliers, and cutting down on food miles.
Under Entrust, local Staffordshire county farmers who previously supplied meat, vegetables and milk to schools are continuing to do so.
In fact, school caterers are actually increasing their use of locally-sourced ingredients and products, increasing employment opportunities across Staffordshire.
The news comes on the back of Entrust offering reception and year 7 pupils a free school meal until 20 September, to further encourage more people to take up school meals and taste the newly-designed menus.
County Councillor Ben Adams, cabinet member for learning and skills said: “We know how important it is for children and young people to eat well, and this price freeze will help support families and mean they can continue to enjoy great value for money nutritious meals.
“By using local suppliers wherever possible, we can keep food miles down but still provide the high quality meals that parents expect. We are still conforming to nutritional standards, but the way in which we procure and provide our services means costs can remain low without compromising on quality.
“In addition to providing a high standard of meals for our young people we are ensuring we support local business and Staffordshire’s economy, as well as helping families.”
