LIONS had the unenviable task of travelling to table-topping Longton at the weekend but put up a spirited performance, even in defeat.
Lions made the task even harder from the off by conceding two sloppy goals in the first four minutes – but with their backs to the wall, they never let their heads drop.
A couple of outstanding saves by Callum Davies kept the Lions in touch and the visitors were rewarded with a goal 15 minutes from time.
Lions broke from their own penalty area with Owen Denny playing in Kieran Millward, who bore down on goal before seeing his shot beaten away.
James Aberley reacted quickest to pull the ball back for Elliot Knott to fire home.
Lions then threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser and were almost rewarded – but James Hollins' effort came off the inside of the post and away to safety, as the home side held on.
