A planning application has been submitted for a new 11-bedroom care home for young women.

John Munroe Hospital Group has applied for permission to demolish a bungalow on a site in Park Road, Leek, and to build an "independent care home" in it's place.

To be named 'Step Down' Residential Home Facility, it is set to comprise of three floors with a reception, kitchen and meeting rooms, nine en-suite bedrooms, a communal lounge and dining room, two semi-independent units each comprising a bedroom and separate living space, as well as an office and staff facilities.

A statement to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council by John Munroe Hospital Group said: "The proposal fulfils a social function in the provision of nursing care for young women.

"The proposal will generate employment in the form of nursing/caring, cleaning, cooking, laundry and management."

The Lymes, 69 Park Road, site already has outline planning permission for the demolition of the bungalow and the erection of four dwellings. The initial permission was granted in October 2010 and a renewal was granted in November 2013.

A report outlining the new planning application said: "The current bungalow has had little improvement or updating since the 1930s and now requires a substantive amount of investment to bring it up to 21st century standard.

"It requires re-roofing and new windows. Also necessary are a proper heating system, electrical rewiring, a new kitchen and bathrooms, wall and loft insulation, improved driveway and parking areas and a new garage. It is therefore an appropriate time to consider alternative viable options. The replacement of this dwelling with a care home development makes economic and practical sense in the use of the land available in this edge of town location."

The planning application also states that the development of the site, if granted, will see an increase in on-site car parking from two to six spaces.

The John Munroe Hospital Group is a mental health provider of "individualised, high quality, psychiatric rehabilitation".

The Group has a hospital in Rudyard and head office in Cross Street Mill, Leek.

When contacted by the Post & Times to clarify the intended use for the proposed care home, no-one was available for comment at John Munroe Hospital Group.
