Hair and Beauty students are being offered exciting opportunities in Leek with the launch of two new courses in nails and theatrical make-up.

From September, Hair and Beauty at Leek, run by Buxton and Leek College will be running two new one year courses offering Advanced Diplomas in Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up as well as Nail Services.

The commercial salon, off Stockwell Street, is extending its opening hours to clients and a new nail bar and media make-up salon will be opening in September.

Programme Co-ordinator Lorraine Hale said: "Both the new courses offer very exciting and creative opportunities and, now that we are part of the University of Derby, we have very strong links with Derby's theatre where students can put their training into practice.

"In fact, Sheila Hughes, programme co-ordinator at Buxton campus, is currently working with the hair and beauty students to support Derby Theatre's fashion show.

"During both new training programmes, students will also be able to participate in our annual Hair and Beauty show during which they work with a professional photographer.

"We also offer the opportunity to enter professional nail competitions and attend trade shows to gain inspiration and keep up to date with the latest trends and treatments."

Lorraine and Sheila are set to visit the United Make-up Artists Expo in London on April 5 for the opportunity of networking with Oscar winning artists.

Students interested in the Level 3 Diploma in Nail Services must have a Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy or Manicure. They will learn about UV gel, nail wraps, nail art and airbrush design and electric filing as well as promotional business activities. The Theatrical Make-Up course requires a Level 2 certificate in either Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy.

Work experience in industry forms an integral part of both courses and the Theatrical Make Up course explores the skills required by the make-up designer with the emphasis on research techniques and design planning. Special effects including casualty simulation, casting, sculpting, creative design and prosthetic manufacture may also be studied.

Prospective students can find out more by calling Hair and Beauty at Leek on 0800 0740099 or visiting the website at www.blc.ac.uk.

Students are always looking for models – and not just for dramatic theatre make-up. The hair salon will be open every Monday from 2pm until 8.30pm, Tuesdays from 9am until noon, Thursdays 1pm to 8pm and Fridays from 9 am until 4pm. Beauty treatments are offered between 1pm and 4pm Mondays, 9am to 4pm Tuesdays, 1pm until 4pm Thursdays and 9am until 4pm on Fridays. Clients should call 01538 385184 to book an appointment.
