A MOTHER-OF-SIX has turned her hand to selling special diet pet food.

Kerry Podmore, who lives in Blackshaw Moor, near Leek, discovered hypo-allergenic pet food after her search for new food for one of her five dogs.

Kerry’s canine friends include: Poodles 22- month-old Gracie and 15-month-old Molly; four-year-old Shiatsu Rosie; Toy Poodle Lulu, aged 23 months; and 15-month-old Miniature Poodle Poppy.

Kerry explained: “It was when Molly was around six-months-old; she was being sick and also scratching a lot.

“I did a lot of research on the internet and decided to try hypo-allergenic food for her.

“It took around a month of her being on the new food but her symptoms disappeared and she has been fine ever since.” Kerry added that even though the hypoallergenic food was helping her pooch, she found that the special dietary food was generally quite expensive compared to normal pet food.

She said: “Most were really expensive so I came up with the idea to try and supply such pet food at an affordable price and offer it at people’s convenience – for example deliver the food to customers’ homes any time day or evening, to save them hauling bags of dog food around with their shopping.” Kerry, who is in remission from thyroid cancer, said: “I used to work for Clowes Coaches but had to give that up when I became ill.

“I have had two operations to remove the cancer and also had a course of radiotherapy.

“I was given the all clear last October, but as the cancer was in my thyroid I still can be unwell.

“With setting up a pet food business, it enables me to work from home with my husband’s help if I have an off day.” Kerry's pet food range, which she has named ‘Pure Gold Pet Food’ with the slogan ‘because your pet matters’, is one 100 per cent natural and is available for both cats and dogs.

She said: “All our ingredients contain no artificial colours or preservatives. The food is wheat and wheat gluten free. We also have cereal and grain free options available.” Kerry added: “I only put a small margin of profit onto the price of the dog food I sell, which I get directly from a large manufacturer.

“This way it keeps the price down for my customers.” Kerry explained that hypo-allergenic food can also be good for dogs with a wide variety of other conditions including skin irritations and mucky ears.

She said: “It is great for a range of allergy sufferers as well as fussy eaters – cats and dogs."
