LEEK’S Gene Mealey, pictured left, has been awarded the grand master grade of black belt 8th Dan at Kempo Ju Jitsu.

His brother, Gary, has also been made a 7th Dan.

The grading was awarded by the founders of Bushi Kempo Ju Jitsu, David Hand and Chris Hand.

Kempo Ju Jitsu is a martial art combining ancient fighting techniques, traditional weapons skills and modern self-defence.

Gene has been teaching Ju Jitsu since 1980 and over the years, he has graded numerous students, both children and adults, to black belt standard.

“Kempo Ju Jitsu is great for improving the self-confidence and discipline of children and adults alike,” said Gene, who has also coached the British team.

He has travelled overseas to teach and as been asked to run a seminar in Sweden later this year.

Gene, who supervises classes at Brough Park Leisure Centre in Leek, added: “It was a great honour to be awarded this grand master grade.

“It has been a pleasure to teach so many people over the years and I hope to teach many more in the future.” For more information, contact Gene on 07792 013962
