A Leek student has been crowned champion at a European equine games event.

Abi Caiger, a student from Buxton & Leek College, has recently returned from Sweden where, after an immensely tight competition, her team were crowned 'Champions of Gothenburg' in the 2014 Mounted Games.

The event was held in front of a 15,000 strong crowd.

Abi, aged 17, and her team – brothers Jack and Rory Capel, and Quentin and Victor Voeltezel – fought off the fierce competition to win the championships by just one point at the Scandinavium Stadia in Gothenburg.

Mounted Games is a series of relay and obstacle type races performed at high speed by very athletic riders and their ponies.

The Mounted Games Association of Great Britain (MGAGB) has more than 1,500 members who compete regularly both in this country and abroad throughout the riding season.

Abi, who studies BTEC Level 3 Sports Development, Coaching and Fitness at the Leek campus of Buxton and Leek College, said: "The competition had to be one of my proudest and best memories throughout my time competing within mounted games."

Abi and her team also compete in county teams and last year they rode for Monmouthshire, where they finished as Reserve British Champions in the under 17 age group.
