Leek-based early music group Piva have a number of major folk and music festival appearances lined up for 2014.

This is something of a departure from their normal setting of churches, concert halls and historical houses but a route that they are really looking forward to.

Their first date is Sunday, June 1 at the Acoustic Festival of Britain which is being held at Uttoxeter Racecourse. This is the festivals sixth year and it has become a well-established event attracting some big names.

Topping the bill in 2014 are Fairport Convention, Steve Harley (from Cockney Rebel), Matt Cardle, Seth Lakemen and The Animals.

Jane Moulder from Piva said: "We are all really chuffed to be playing at such a great festival and I can't believe that we are on the bill alongside some of my own personal musical heroes.

"The festival always has an eclectic mix of music but with the emphasis on good entertainment. It's fantastic that they are embracing 16th century music along with the mix. It's a really enlightened approach."

Eric Moulder, Piva's musical director, added: "In this country there is a tendency for music to be categorised and put into boxes and because Piva is listed as 'early music', there is a danger that we can be overlooked.

"But what we play is just good music – it was popular music in the 16th century, music that people danced, drank and relaxed to.

"So it's not surprising that it can be enjoyed in the 21st century. We always get such positive feedback from our audiences and people saying things like "I never knew early music was like that".

"We love it when we can change people's perceptions about renaissance music."

Later on in the year, Piva will be playing at one of the premier folk festivals in the country – Shrewsbury – over the August Bank Holiday. That will be followed soon afterwards by the Manifold Folk Gathering on September 19 to 21 and then at Goosfest 2014 in October.

As well as appearing at festivals, Piva, pictured above, are still playing and performing concerts in more conventional settings and all their forthcoming appearances are listed on their website and Facebook page.
