THE LEEK Branch of the North Staffs Junior League won the Doug Brown Founders Trophy at Trubshaw Cross on Sunday.
This competition is held in memory of the founder of local Ladsandads Doug Brown, and each branch of the North Staffs Junior League submits a team consisting of players from all teams in their branch.
Leek's team consisted of players from Leek Town, Werrington Tigers, and, Waterhouses.
The team was jointly managed by Kev Lawton (Werrington Tigers) and Steve Machin (Leek Town).
Leek progressed as winners of their group with victories over Kidsgrove and Milton, and a draw against Blurton.
The semi-final saw Leek overcome a strong Trubshaw side.
The final was a tense affair against Newcastle, who only have one team in their branch – they were all familiar with each other and had finished second in the regular league season, so were tough opponents.
With the score 0-0 after normal time, neither team could break the deadlock in extra time so the tie went to penalties.
Leek's players scored their five penalties, and goalkeeper Jack Machin saved the last Newcastle penalty to give Leek the victory.
