The Queen of the Moorlands is about to explode with music, drama, fine art and photography as a packed programme of more than 40 events in this year's Leek Arts Festival gets under way.

This year's festival offers a bewildering range of activities including top name artists – Richard Digance, Fairport Convention, Gavin Sutherland, Mark Radcliffe, Vic Godard – along with local favourites such as Leek Choral Society, the Phoenix Singers, Leek Floral Art, Funk Station and many more.

And with tickets selling fast for many events, local people are being urged to get theirs while there is still some left.

Festival spokesman Phil Edmeades, said: "Last year we launched online ticket sales through our website at www.leekartsfestival.org and that proved quite successful.

"This year word has clearly got round that tickets are available online and many people are choosing to buy tickets that way. We have already sold a lot for acts like Richard Digance, Gavin Sutherland and The Vice Bishops, and for The Roving Crows.

"Interestingly, many of the online sales are to people from outside the area, including London, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Scotland and beyond, which means the Festival is attracting new people to Leek who will be spending money in the town and supporting local businesses."

None of the key events have yet completely sold out and tickets are still available online, from Leek Tourist Information Centre and from The Foxlowe Arts Centre.

Phil added: "With the local economy improving we are hoping people have a bit of extra cash in their pockets and will be ready to spend some of it on enjoying what Leek Arts Festival has to offer.

"With everything from folk, funk and photography, to choral music, comedy and a cheeky bit of burlesque, we think this year's programme genuinely offers something for everyone."
