INTERNATIONAL runner Tom Humphries (Cannock and Staffs) smashed his own course record to win the Cheadle Spring 5 road race.
With an amazing display of solo running, Humphries sliced 45 seconds off the course record to finish in 23:39, just one second off his life time best for the distance.
His domination of the rest of the field was shown by his winning margin of almost four minutes.
In second place was Ian Salt (Uttoxeter RR), 27:31, who edged out last year's runner-up, Cory Parker (Burton AC), 27:37.
The ladies race was a much closer affair, with Christine Holmes (Trentham RC) winning in 30:27, just 15 seconds ahead of Sharon Johnstone (Wilmslow RC). Louise Dawson (City of Stoke AC) finished third in a time of 33.:32.
It was a good day for Staffordshire Moorlands AC, with Gareth Briggs fifth in the senior men category in a time of 27:52.
There were also age group prizes for Craig Jeffery first MV40, Roger Grand second MV40, Peter Lucas first MV50 and Paul Light first MV55.
There was also success for the hosts, with Cheadle Running Club members Dave Allen and Carl Astley first and second in the MV45 veteran age category.
Elsewhere, John Corbett (Trentham RC) won his age category for the fourth year running. In doing so, he has improved his race time each year – quite an achievement considering that he has moved from the MV60 to MV65 category. At the presentations after the race, race director Mick Beardmore expressed his thanks to sponsors Stoddards Coaches and Derek Fower Transport, who have supported the race since its inception in 1990.
The next race to be staged by Cheadle Running Club will be the Cheadle 4 on July 13.
