PM Training has joined forces with Your Housing Group and Seddon to offer apprenticeships in construction thanks to a home building programme called Ascent.

Over the next three years the £11.1m Ascent programme, a partnership between Staffordshire Moorlands District Council and Your Housing Group, will see 424 residential units built across the Staffordshire Moorlands Area.

Seddon is the main developer for the scheme and the initial builds include:

- 16 new houses over two sites in Mackensie Crescent and Harbourne Road, Cheadle

- 16 new houses in O’Hare Place, Leek

- Five new houses in Fairview Road, Leek

- 34 new houses in Haregate Road, Leek

- 35 new houses in Horsecroft Farm, Leek

Ascent is keen to ensure local people are given the best opportunities to work on the developments and, to achieve this, PM Training will host an employment day on March 6 as part of apprenticeship week.

The Construction Jobs Fair will take place at PM Leek, Portland Mill, Queen Street, Leek, ST13 6LW, between 10am and 3pm.

Seddon will offer 10 young people opportunities to work in joinery, bricklaying, labouring etc. and these roles are open to anyone aged 18 to 24.

All apprentices will gain qualifications while working and being paid.

After July there will be further opportunities for interior trades apprentices in plumbing, electrics, decorating etc. and information on those will also be available at the fair.

Dan Nolan, aged 18, from Cross Heath, is currently a PM Training apprentice with Seddon. He said: “Apprenticeships are a good way to get into work.

“My qualifications weren’t great when I left school but I’ve learnt lots of new skills since becoming an apprentice.

“I’ve been at Seddon for three months and it has given me a chance to try different types of work in construction.

“I get to have a go at everything, and I would recommend apprenticeships to other young people.”
