A GRANDMOTHER in Leek had an early Christmas treat last week when she learned that she had won a large hamper courtesy of The Co-operative Food Store in the town, after winning a competition run by the Post & Times.
Maureen, who lives in the Compton area of Leek, was one of many readers who entered the competition, launched in the Post & Times’ Christmas Special magazine.
The hamper contained all the ingredients needed for a family Christmas dinner including a turkey crown, beef, ‘pigs in blankets’, stuffing, mince pies, Christmas cake and pudding, as well as crackers. For the adults there was also white and red wine, as well as a bottle of Bucks Fizz.
Maureen said: “I am so pleased that I have won this hamper.
“I will be making Christmas dinner at my daughter’s house this year for some of my grandchildren, as my daughter, Tracey will be working on Christmas Day.
“She works at Ward 223 at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and I often make them a bit of a buffet for Christmas Day, so some of this hamper will be used for that too.”
Maureen, who is well-known locally for her fund-raising within the community, in particular for Children In Need, added: “As a family, we have had a bit of a bad year through ill health.
“Winning this hamper has given us a bit of a good ending to a bad year.”
Co-op store manager Sue Finneron said: “This is all part of the work that we do within the community. This is the second year that we have run this competition with the Post & Times.”
“We hope to carry it on next year when this store because a Waitrose.”
Angela Wynne, commercial manager at the Post & Times, said: “The response to this competition is the best we have had.”
