A fleet of 18 minibuses and coaches which have provided public and school transport in the Staffordshire Moorlands for decades are up for sale.

The vehicles, which are owned by Clowes Coaches and have been a familiar sight on the district' s roads, are being auctioned off by the firm later this month.

The sale comes after the family-run business decided to cease its service bus and school bus contracts to concentrate on the holiday side of the business.

Clowes Coaches began in 1976 when George, and his wife Kath, started out with a 12-seater minibus which they used for a school service contract that they had gained for the Longnor/Flash area to Leek.

This contract they have covered for the past 38 years.

Mr Clowes said: "We just decided to have a bit less mither and just keep the holidays going.

"The drivers who worked on those contracts have been made redundant, but I believe they have found jobs with the bus companies that have now taken on those contracts."

He added: "We have enjoyed offering the services.

"It has always been a pleasure to do it and we appreciate the friends that we have made along the way.

"We would especially like to thank those who used the school runs in the Longnor and Flash area for their support, in particular during the many wintry months where they always showed understanding if we had any issues such as very deep snow."

Clowes Coaches runs around 40 holidays a year to a variety of holiday venues such as Llandudno, Scarborough, Great Yarmouth and Weymouth. Mr Clowes, whose daughter Angela Barks also helps with the family business, said: "The holidays we offer are going very well and they will continue as they always have."

The vehicles which will be auctioned off are of varied sizes from eight to 61 seaters, and vary in age, from seven to 24 years.

The auction will take place at the Clowes Coaches depot in Barrowmoor, near Longnor at 10am on Saturday, April 26.

Viewing of the vehicles will be available on Friday April 25, between 10am and 4pm. For further information about the vehicles be available call Malcolm Harrison Auctions on 01630 674326 or email auctions@malcolmharrison.co.uk.
