BLUES inflicted a first defeat of the season on fancied Goole AFC at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds, on Saturday.
Leek boss Lee Casswell, who was taking charge for the first time after returning from holiday, said: "We knew that Goole would provide stiffer opposition so we deserved the victory, although it should have been by a much greater margin.
"We went in at the break two goals to the good and we had to stand up to them in the second half as expected.
"But the back five were superb, showing that they could deal with whatever a decent Goole side could throw at them.
"We got our tactics spot on today and whilst Dan Shelley edged it for me, they couldn't handle Liam Shotton on the day, while Matt Bell turned in one of his best performances in a midfield role".
Shotton was unlucky not to score twice in the opening six minutes, before Leek took a deserved lead in the 16th minute.
It was Shotton again who took on the home defence before powering past his marker to drive a shot high into the roof of the net.
Goole's main threat came from the long throw tactic from both flanks, but Blues dealt with the danger.
Blues increased their lead in the 31st minute after winning a free kick 20-yards out. Shelley beat the keeper to score with a low drive.
Chapman had to be at his best in the 48th minute to keep out a well-struck effort from Hinsley.
Goole began to pressurise Leek and Gascoigne forced a good save from Chapman with a volley.
Leek had penalty appeals for a handling offence turned down in the 68th minute, before eight minutes later Shotton was clumsily bundled off the ball by Muhammed Sabo.
Sabo was dismissed and the referee awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, but he then changed his mind and awarded a penalty after consulting with his assistant.
The normally reliable Jordan Johnson claimed the ball and struck his spot-kick well – only for the keeper to pull off a great save.
Despite their one-man disadvantage, the home side continued to push forward without really testing Chapman – until he raced off his line to dive at Hinsley's feet three minutes from the end.
