AS PART of Abbey View Tennis Club’s centenary celebrations, 16 members – mostly dressed in Edwardian style clothes – gathered on Sunday for an unusual competition.
They used old wooden-framed racquets from a variety of sources to play a round robin tournament.
After several hours playing, however, it was agreed to make the switch to the more modern racquets! At the end, David Bennett counted up the individual average scores and club chairman Colin Kinshott presented the engraved crystal brandy glasses.
Rachel Chadwick was the worthy winner with Dave Williamson – who had never played with a wooden racquet before – the runner-up. Afterwards, spectators and players enjoyed a picnic tea, and everyone agreed it had been a successful and a most enjoyable event.
The next centenary event is a threecourse dinner at Westwood Golf Club, Leek on Saturday, September 21 (7 pm).
Any current or past member wanting to attend should contact vice chairman Joan Bennett on 01538 384106 or mobile 07989 432 937.
The club’s county A team drew at home to Florence 2 -2, and in the City and Suburban League the A team lost 3 -1 to Basford at home and the B team drew 2 -2 against visitors Stone B.
