Downton Abbey – Christmas Day, 8.30pm, ITV DOWNTON Abbey's Christmas special rather confusingly transports the toffs to the summer season.
As part of Rose's coming out, she's to be presented at Buckingham Palace, and the family and servants are thus at their London residence, preparing for the busy social program.
Not one to miss such a grand occasion, Cora's mother Martha, in the form of Shirley MacLaine, makes the journey from New York with playboy son Harold, fresh from a recent brush with the law. Both are outspoken and larger than life, making quite an impression among London's high society.
But, as the episode unfolds, it soon becomes clear there are bigger matters to contend with. Edith, for instance, is wrestling with a moral dilemma – having been left pregnant and alone, will she go through with plans to give away her baby?
Rose, meanwhile, sees her coming out as the perfect chance to hook someone befitting her high opinion of herself. And she would appear to have succeeded when she hits the dancefloor with the Prince of Wales.
Elsewhere, Anna is on tenterhooks as to whether husband Bates was indeed responsible for the death of Lord Gillingham's valet, and Isobel Crawley inches towards romance with Lord Merton.
Downstairs, they don't miss out on the excitement as Daisy receives an unexpected invitation and Carson treats the staff to a special day out – it's Black Friday at Asda.
