TWO charities are set to benefit from a charity evening in Leek this week.

Former Coronation Street star Denise Welch is just one of the celebrities that local businessman Steve Lanza has enlisted for a fund-raising event tomorrow, Thursday, November 28.

Other celebrities include actress Patricia Penrose of Heartbeat and Coronation Street fame.

Steve said: "This is a charity event called Christmas with Denise Welch and friends, that will hopefully be an annual thing every year.

"The public will be able to have their pictures taken with the celebrities and the photographs can be signed as soon as they are printed on the evening for just £5 and all the money will go to the GEM appeal."

Founded in 1994 and with primary goal of 'funding research, finding cures' the GEM Appeal charity works hard to fund research development to treat rare genetic diseases in children.

The celebrities visiting Leek will be in a marquee, provided by the Leek Rotary Club, outside Mosaic in Sheepmarket, Leek, from 7pm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, on the same evening, the Leek-based Jo's Dreams has enlisted 15 businesses in the Sheepmarket and Stanley Street areas of Leek to take part in a fund-raising event to raise funds to enable the charity to send local man Andrew Broadhurst, who suffers with kidney problems, on holiday.

The shops will be donating 10 per cent of their takings from the event, which will take place from 5pm until 8pm tomorrow, Thursday, November 28, to Jo's Dreams.

The businesses that will be taking part include: Becalmed, Bibelot, Bo Belles, Chaplins, Dougal's Den, Market Kitchen Cafe, Moorlands Cook Shop, Over The Rainbow, Pronto, The Alphabet Store, The Blue Plate, The Book Shop, The Butty Shop, The Frock Market, and Touche.
