AN INTERNATIONAL star of the folk rock world made a welcome return to a Staffordshire Moorlands music club.

The Folk At The Lion, at The Red Lion In Cheddleton last night (Thursday, November 28), featured Ric Sanders, pictured, of Fairport Convention fame.

Since 1985 Ric has been the violinist with Fairport Convention, touring the world with them and contributing many instrumental compositions and arrangements which have become fixtures in their repertoire.

In 2001 the group received the BBC "Folk on Two" Lifetime Achievement Award.

Although considering himself to be primarily a jazz musician, Ric has proved himself to be equally at home in the worlds of rock, folk and world music.

Early in his career he toured with the renowned classical/rock percussionist Stomu Yamash'ta, and then went on to play in groups with the celebrated jazz pianists Johnny Patrick and Michael Garrick.

In the late 70's he was in both 'The Albion Band' (recording the classic album 'Rise Up Like The Sun') and the legendary jazz-rock group 'Soft Machine'.

Sometimes with Fairport and sometimes solo, he has worked with a remarkably diverse rosta of artists including Rick Wakeman, Dave Cousins (The Strawbs), Jethro Tull, Robert Plant, Roy Harper, Gary Brooker (Procol Harum), Pentangle, Gordon Giltrap, Andrew Cronshaw, June Tabor, Martin Simpson, Charlie Landsborough, All About Eve, The Mission and John Etheridge (guitarist with Soft Machine and Stephane Grappelli) with whom Ric co-led the group 'Second Vision', whose critically acclaimed album has just been released.

Ric was joined for the Folk At The Lion gig by Vo Fletcher.

The pair had their first group together when barely out of their teens, playing the repertoire of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt around the jazz and folk clubs of Birmingham.

Vo went on to become a prolific composer for television.

He has recorded and performed with such notable artists as Nigel Kennedy, Touch and Go, Rik Mayall, Dave Swarbrick, Andrew Cronshaw, Martin Simpson, Donovan and many others.

he next Folk at the Lion gig, which will take pace at The Red Lion in Cheddleton on Thursday, December 12, and feature Jolly Jock.
