A FOUR towns initiative has been deemed as a group for the enjoyment of “chain gang” members.
The debate about the Four Towns Initiative between Leek, Cheadle, Uttoxeter and Ashbourne occurred during Leek Town Council’s recent meeting.
The initiative, which began 18 months ago to jointly promote the four market towns, has seen the four town councils produce a ‘Markets, Antiques and Peaks’ leaflet and host a joint civic ball at Alton Towers.
The discussion came about as Leek town councillors were asked to approve a constitution which has been drawn up for the initiative.
Councillor Brian Johnson said: “What as a town council are we aiming to get out of this?
“I am struggling to find the connection with Ashbourne and Uttoxeter. Fair enough Cheadle as we are in the same district.”
He added: “I see this as a chain gang group who like the idea of civic balls. It's for their enjoyment. I can't see what they are going to do.”
In reply councillor John Fisher said: “The objective is to promote the tourism, history, culture and environment of the four towns. It’s times like these where it is up to us to help our own towns.
“We are not trying to outdo the district council and they seem to be happy with the four towns initiative."
