PREPARATIONS for the 15th Leek Chess Congress are now well under way.

This major event in the national chess calendar will take place at Westwood College Old Hall, Leek, between September 12 and 14.

There are usually three sections for players of differing abilities, depending on the number of entries.

The congress attracts player from all over the country and welcomes newcomers to the game, whether they are members of a club or not.

In the top section last year, the winner was Alex Richardson of Fenton, with four points.

Joint runners-up were Ali Jaunooby (Denton), Rob Shaw (Cheddleton), Mike Surtees (Bolton) and Mark Talbot (Wigan) – all with three and a half points.

The middle section was won by Mick Connor (Great Lever), with four and a half points, and joint runners-up were Bill Armstrong (Cheddleton) and Andrew (Lake of Boldmere St Michael) with four points each.

The lower section was won by Channel Four Child Genius of the Year, Sharon Daniel (Bolton) with four and a half points, with Sam Beardmore (Cheddleton) and Tom Robson (Macclesfield) joint runners-up with four points each.
