CHEADLE are staring relegation in the face after suffering yet another defeat – their ninth of the season – in Division One of the North Staffs and South Cheshire League.

This time, it was the turn of promotion-seeking Elworth to turn the screw. Yasir Ali – not for the first time – was Elworth's source of inspiration, both with bat and ball.

He made 73 in Elworth's 192 all out, which saw Cheadle's James Sellers take 5-65 in a fine attempt to stem the tide.

Cheadle were making a good fist of their reply, reaching 97-1, before collapsing to 136 all out.

Sujith Nikethanka (50), pictured, and Andy Coxon (44) laid the groundwork, but Ali (4-42) and Jason Brown (3-41) scuppered Cheadle's hopes of registering a much-needed fifth win of the summer.

To add to Cheadle's disappointing day, the team above them, Betley, beat Sandyford to open up a 20-point gap.

There were no victory celebrations for Cheadle 2XI either – Whitmore veteran Tony Dutton made sure of that, with a superb all-round performance.

The Staffordshire over-50s captain top-scored with 81 in Whitmore's 224-5 declared, and then took 5-49 as Cheadle tumbled to 194 all out.

Eric Gavin (62), Tom Cadman (42) and Paul Barker (30) gave their best for Cheadle up against a determined Dutton and Lee Fallows (4-24).
