IT is a great honour for me, as Town Mayor, to be given this opportunity to address the people of Cheadle and surrounding areas at this special time of year.

I would like to thank all the local groups and organisations for all their hard work through these difficult times and congratulate them for everything they do, not only for their own good causes, but for the good of our beautiful town, which we should all be proud of.

Last weekend saw the lights in the town being switched on which brings Christmas a little nearer to all of us; Cheadle may not be a large town compared to some, but whatever we try to do we celebrate in style, and try to include everyone in the community. None of this would be able to take place without the help and support of the people of Cheadle and their willingness to make their town a pleasant place to live, work and play, and also to help each other. Christmas is a time for celebrating, a time for love and also forgiveness, a time to help others of the community that are less fortunate than ourselves. So spare a little extra time to help anyone in your neighbourhood who lives on their own, especially as the weather may take a turn for the worse and we get the snow and they may not be able to get out and about.

I have been most fortunate to have been invited to many organisations, schools, societies and events where I have seen how much time and effort is put in by people to improve other people's lives. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those concerned in the many groups and services and to encourage others to take part.

I hope that those working for the armed forces and who may be unable to be at home with their families at this Christmas time wherever they are in the world may they return safely home in the near future to their loving families.

I would like to thank members of Cheadle Town Council for their commitment and their valuable support and the Council staff for their hard work over the past months. The Town Mayor, Cllr Ian Plant and the Town Mayoress, Kath Plant would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and healthy Christmas and peaceful and prosperous New Year.
