WHEN Staffordshire Moorlands District Council Chairman Jim Davies wanted to arrange a concert in Leek to raise money for his charities, he didn’t have far to look for inspiration – he just asked his wife.
Sue Davies has been a member of Leek's Phoenix Singers for a number of years, and the choir was happy to help.
Proceeds from the concert will be divided between research on prostate cancer at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and local organisations that rely on trained volunteers.
The concert on Saturday, October 19, will feature Phoenix director Ashley Thompson's New Gloria, a modern re-working of Vivaldi's piece, plus other choir favourites.
There will also be a contribution from the junior choir, Young Phoenix, guided by director Vicky Ainslie The concert will be held at All Saints' Church in Leek starting at 7pm.
Tickets cost £7 (£1 for under 18s) and are available from Leek Tourist Office; Westwood Road Post Office, Leek; The Book Shop in Stanley Street, all in Leek, and also from Council Connect, Town Hall, Biddulph. To buy tickets on-line, see the website www.phoenixsingersleek.co.uk Mr Davies has offered to be the local ‘champion’ for UHNS’s work on prostate cancer during his year of office because research on this is currently underfunded, despite prostate cancer being the most common cancer in men.
Recent statistics have revealed that one in eight men will get prostate cancer. Of those one in 33 will develop an aggressive form which will spread to other parts of the body, and there is no way at present of diagnosing which patients will develop the aggressive form and there is no reliable cure for those who do develop it.
If anyone is interested in helping Jim to raise money by making a donation to his charities or organising a fund-raising event, call him on 01782 514478.
The Phoenix Singers (Leek) is a community choir for mixed voices – soprano, alto, tenor, bass – which welcomes anyone who enjoys singing. There are no auditions.
