DOZENS of cakes were stolen from an arts centre while a music concert took place.

The culinary delights, worth in the region of £75, were taken from the kitchen at The Foxlowe Arts Centre, Leek, during a Rodina Jazz concert on Saturday evening.

The items stolen, which had been baked ready for the centre's cafe on Sunday, included a carrot cake, a dozen scones, a Victoria sponge, several pieces of fruit cake, a number of flapjacks and several pieces of polenta.

Centre manager Ian Wilson said: "They, whoever they were, stole most of the cakes and scones that had been prepared for Sunday.

"There is hardly a crumb of evidence left.

"Our chefs have had to bake like demons to replace what was taken."

It is believed that the sweet-toothed thieves struck between 8pm and 10.30pm on Saturday evening.

Mr Wilson added: "We are now reviewing the security at the Foxlowe and will also be speaking to the police about any possible CCTV footage of the area from Saturday evening to hopefully be able to catch the culprits.

"The Foxlowe Arts Centre has been running for two-and-a -half years now and we have not had anything like this happen before. Nothing else was taken."
