A NEW choir has formed following a successful singing workshop at an arts centre.
Peace Through Folk is an informal trust which was established in the Staffordshire Moorlands in 1997 to celebrate peace, goodwill, reconciliation and fellowship, through the folk music traditions of the world and other related forms of performing arts.
And now the trust has launched the all-new 'Peace through Folk Choir'.
Co-director of the Peace Through Folk trust, Malcolm Hawksworth of Leek, explained: "Following the success of the workshop and performances led by Janet Russell during the '1914-2014 In Celebration of Peace Festival' at The Foxlowe Arts Centre, Janet has kindly agreed to act as the musical director for our first six classes to help launch the Peace through Folk Choir.
"The choir will be able to develop a repertoire which celebrates peace, goodwill, reconciliation and fellowship and related issues. It will also be great fun.
"The first session took place in the film room at The Foxlowe Arts Centre in May and was a great occasion."
The cost per choir session will be £7 per participant and each session will last for around two and a half hours with a short break in the middle.
Malcolm added: "Places are limited and 16 people have already signed up so people need to let us know as soon as possible if they would like to join us.
"In due course we may occasionally move around to rehearse in a variety of places that have great acoustic qualities, but mainly we will stay in Leek in easily accessed fully serviced venues."
The following Peace through Folk Choir sessions have been organised so far: this Sunday (June 15) at St Peter's in Alstonefield; Sunday, July 20 at the Cupcake Café & Bakery in Leek.
On Saturday, August 22 in the Peace Tent at Shrewsbury Folk Festival; Sundays, September 21 and October 12 at Cupcake Café & Bakery (or a bigger venue if numbers grow above 20).
The choir is also set to meet at the Manifold Folk Gathering in Alstonefield on Sunday, September 21.
