A LOCAL farmer and butchers business have teamed up to provide the "quality supreme local beef".

Cheddleton farmer Wayne Smith took top honours at Bakewell Christmas Prime Stock Show and Sale, which was held at the beginning of December.

The Supreme Champion Heifer was judged Best in Show out of 33 other prime cattle.

The cattle were judged by Mr A Much of Oxford.

Leek butchers H Meakin and Sons Ltd purchased the Supreme Champion to help them celebrate 125 years in business.

A spokesman at Meakin, which has shops in Derby Street and Queen Street, as well as a stall in the town's Butter Market, said: "Meakins always strive to provide top quality local meat for their customers.

"We spend a lot of money to bring the best quality back to Leek - and we have certainly bought a special animal here."
