A TRADITIONAL five-a-side football tournament kicked off Christmas for students at the Leek campus of Buxton and Leek College.
More than 110 students and staff took part in the Christmas competition at the Biddulph Valley Leisure Centre, where 14 teams battled it out for the trophy. And, after a very keenly fought contest, a team of second year Sports Development Coaching and Fitness students snatched victory from the staff team.
Leading the action were course co-ordinators Shane Beckensall and Becky Whiston, and all competitors sported British Heart Foundation shirts in recognition of the charity they have chosen to support this year.
Shane said: "This is the 14th year of the five-a-side competition and it always proves a great end to a tough four-month term.
"We all enjoyed a festive buffet at the end and individual prizes were given out to top players. It was great to see people taking part from all areas of the college including art, engineering, ICT health and social care, as well as the sports department."
The final was a match between the staff and Year Two sports teams, with the sports students emerging victorious on a final score of 6 – 4.
Best male was named as Josh Davies and best female Samantha Jervis. Jake Mills and Mitch Hunt shared the prize for best goal celebration, while the best goalkeeper was Ruby Millward and best goal scored by Joe Walten.
Students will be furthering their charity efforts in the New Year with a sponsored stay awake in January followed by a quiz night and bingo at the Westwood Golf Club in Leek.
