FAIRTRADE fortnight has been officially launched in the market town of Leek.

The national celebration, which began on Monday and will run until March 7, is seeing Fairtrade focused events take place across the country. This year's theme is 'Abolish the Unfair Banana!' Leek Town Mayor John Fisher visited the Foxlowe Arts Centre in Leek on Monday to officially launch the event. Customers were offered free banana cake as part of the launch, which also included the opportunity for people to sign a petition calling on the Government to "urgently investigate the impact of unsustainable supermarket pricing of bananas and act to protect the millions of poor farmers and workers who grow the UK's favourite fruit."
