Donations to help fund the running of this year's Leek Arts Festival have been handed over to the organising committee.

John Newall, chairman of the Leek Town Lands Trust, and former Leek Mayor Barry Cowie, were at a meeting to present cheques totalling £2,800 to Leek Arts Festival chairman Robert Plant.

Mr Newall said the Arts Festival was the only organisation the Leek Town Lands Trust supported every year.

He said: "We think the Arts Festival is an extremely important event which has a vital role to play in encouraging community spirit."

Mr Cowie, who donated £500 from his ward councillor community fund and another £300 from charity money left over from his year as Leek Town Mayor, said: "The organisers do a fantastic job and every year manage to assemble a programme of events which many larger towns would struggle to achieve."

This year's festival will see more than 40 events taking place between the end of May and the beginning of April.
