Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre has released its new April to August 2014 Season Brochure, offering up a host of sparkling events for all the family.
The curtain will rise once again for one of Britain's best loved entertainers, the late Eric Morcambe, when the award-winning drama tribute Morecambe takes place from Thursday 22 to Saturday 24 May. Whilst on Wednesday 4 & Thursday 5 June the Opera House celebrates the 50th anniversary of Joe Orton's classic black comedy Entertaining Mr Sloan, a dark exploration of sexual liberation in the 1960s. For an altogether different night come and see the hugely popular puppet musical Avenue Q (from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 June), which follows the story of college graduate Princeton and his journey to find himself in New York.
Children and Family Events
The inaugural Buxton Family Festival will be taking place from Friday 1 to Sunday 17 August, with the Opera House participating in a host of events: TV's Milkshake will return to the stage on Sunday 10 August for a musical spectacular, whilst those who love One Direction can come and see the next best thing Only One Direction Midnight Memories Tour on Saturday 9 August. For a fun-filled picnic with the family whilst watching Alice's Adventures in Wonderland – The Musical, mark Saturday 16 or Sunday 17 August on your calendar. Also don't miss the ever popular Buxton Puppet Festival when it returns from Monday 4 to Saturday 9 August, complete with a colourful array of shows and street performances.
As always there is a host of famous name comedians to cheer us up. Jason Manford will deliver his trademark likeable charm and teasingly intelligent wit on Tuesday 13 May, whilst Jon Richardson, the perennial singleton and misanthrope will appear with his show Ndiot on Sunday 25 May. Dawn French, the beloved star of Vicar of Dibley and French and Saunders – will be at the Opera House on Saturday 14 June. Other comedians include Jimmy Carr (Tuesday 29 July), The Ken Dodd Happiness Show (Thursday 24 April) and Josh Widdicombe (Sunday 18 May).
After last year's success Summer Pops Week is back from Wednesday 30 July to Tuesday 5 August and includes performances from the close harmony swing-pop group The Puppini Sisters on Wednesday 30 July and the singing sensation Barbara Dickson will return on Thursday 31 July. Irish instrumental band Lúnasa will perform with Bella Hardy (BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of The Year) on Friday 1 August. Other acts include The Feeling (Saturday 2 August), Last Night at the Summer Proms (Sunday 3 August) and From The Jam (Monday 4 August).
Opera will include a season of Gilbert and Sullivan shows running from Friday 8 to Saturday 23 August and the esteemed Buxton Festival will return from Friday 11 to Sunday 27 July.
